ASuper Simple Moss-Only Paludarium

This is a super simple moss-only paludarium.

This is actually a terrarium with water. It is a very simple paludarium, so simple that you may almost not notice the water-land structure.

To be more exact, the land area is made only with moss.

Plant: Fissidens moss

Rocks: several large lava rocks and some small lava rock pieces

Other material: a little sphagnum moss

Terrarium: a 8x8x8 inches square terrarium with lid.

How to make it:

Find several large lava rocks and place them inside the terrarium. Make sure they are held in place and do not move.

Add a little sphagnum moss between the rocks. This helps stop the mud from the moss from falling into the water later and making the water dirty.

Pour small lava rock pieces down around the sides to cover the bottom.
Place pieces of Fissidens moss on top of the rocks.

The back of the Fissidens moss already has a thick layer of clay soil, so there is no need to add extra clay.

In fact, if the soil or clay on the back of the moss is too thick and stops the moss from fitting closely onto the rocks, you may need to scrape it thinner with a knife.

For this project, I did not scrape it. I will wait until the moss grows for a while and starts to stand up, then I will trim the edges and make it look cleaner.

Pour water slowly along the glass wall.

And that is it.

How to care for it:

This terrarium has a lid.

There is water at the bottom, and the moisture cannot escape easily. In cool days, it basically does not need much care.

In hot days , you need to leave a small gap for ventilation. Then mist the moss every two or three days. The water at the bottom will also evaporate faster in hot weather, so you may need to add a little water every few days.

You can tell from the condition of the moss that it was just planted.

Fissidens moss that has grown inside a terrarium for some time will not look like this. It will look cleaner, and each small stem will stand upright.
