Where to Find Moss

You don’t need to buy moss.

Whether you live in the city or the countryside, the moss you see on walls, sidewalks, or along roads after rain is usually suitable (commonly Racomitrium or Funaria). Just collect a small patch and bring it home.

How to Set It Up

  1. Add a layer of porous stones (lava rock works best)

  2. Fill about 2/3 of the base

  3. Place your moss directly on top

No need to remove the original soil.

If you want to add small plants, you can include a thin layer of soil.

Watering

  • Keep the water level below the stone layer

  • If you add too much water, simply pour it out

Placement

Place it near the brightest window in your home, but avoid constant direct sunlight.

Moss like Racomitrium and Funaria needs strong indirect light. Occasional direct sunlight is fine—the ventilation allows heat to escape.

In this terrarium I also plant some micro saxifrage.

This two-part geometric dome is designed for those most common moss. It suits for beginners for the follwing reasons:

  • Wide, shallow design allow moss spread.

  • Ventilation prevents rot and lets heat go out.

  • Removable dome makes it easy to manage

will post building video and follow up videos soon.
