Hypnum plumaeforme Wils. moss suits better for open terrarium than close terrarium. You can even raise them with a flower pot without drainage hole in the shade.
I raised some in my basin (an old ceramic kitchenware) and they always look good. I made a terrarium project with them and the photos are taken month later after they are finished.
Here are some photos.
This is a moss suitable for making kokedama (live moss ball). I willw write a new blog for kokedama ball, in various ways.
I did not delete old photos. You can see changes over years.
here is hymnum planted in a fish tank:

planted in a ceramic basin, no drainage.

updates on 2024-04-30 Taken earlier on April. Ths moss grow well on a piece of lava rock.

This is from a brick wall.

Those moss are caltivated in my flower pot.

What Kind of Container Is Best for Hypnum Moss?
Hypnum cupressiforme (Hypnum moss) is not suitable for fully sealed terrariums without ventilation.(If you already use ventilation equipment, you can ignore this point.)
Hypnum moss prefers wide, open containers with a large surface area, rather than deep, enclosed ones.
1️⃣ Wide Shallow Water Tray Method
Use a wide tray filled with water.
Place porous stones in the water—such as brick, cement pieces, lava rock, or absorbent stone. Lay the Hypnum moss on top of the stones.
Hypnum still needs a thin layer of soil contact. You can brush a thin layer of mud slurry over the stone surface to help it attach. I usually use very fine red clay slurry.
This method works best in warm, humid southern regions.
3️⃣ Wide, Shallow Aquarium (Indoor-Friendly, Including Northern Regions)
Use a fish tank—wide rather than deep.
Layer the bottom with lava rock, sphagnum moss, and akadama. Then lay the Hypnum moss on top. You can also plant other species alongside it. (please check the above photo, that glss tank).
If you’ve seen my “perfect moss lawn” video, that flawless, lawn-like moss carpet was grown this way.
What Substrate Does Hypnum Moss Prefer?
It is not picky.
What Plants Pair Well with Hypnum Moss?
Maidenhair ferns (Adiantum) and other fern species work very well.Saxifraga is also a good companion plant.
How Does Hypnum Moss Reproduce?
Hypnum moss belongs to spore-producing plants. It does produce spores.
When environmental conditions are suitable (usually in nature), it forms:
Seta – a thin stalk
Capsule – a small spore capsule at the tip
When mature, the capsule opens and releases spores. If spores land on a moist, stable substrate, they can germinate into new moss.
(below is taken days agon, my flower pot).
However, in terrariums or indoor cultivation, Hypnum moss rarely produces visible sporophytes. Spore production requires stable, near-natural environmental cycles—light variation, temperature shifts, and humidity changes.
So yes, it has spores in theory. But in your home moss tank, you will almost never see them. The Hypnum moss I grow does not produce spores, and the sheets you buy online usually do not have visible sporophytes either.
So How Do You Propagate Hypnum Moss?
In practice, it spreads vegetatively.
Hypnum has creeping stems. In a moist environment, it will:
Spread outward
Develop rhizoids where it touches substrate
Gradually form large moss carpets
That’s why a small patch eventually becomes a full surface cover.
You can simply tear a piece of Hypnum moss into several sections and scatter them over moist lava rock, soil, or clay. Keep the surface moist but not waterlogged. After some time, the fragments will grow into a complete moss mat.
(DO NOT USE blender—just tear it into large pieces by hand.)
This is also the most common commercial propagation method and the simplest way to expand it in a moss terrarium.
And this is exactly why Hypnum moss should be planted in a wide container—it needs room to spread.
One More Practical Tip
It is best to plant Hypnum moss together with Plagiomnium cuspidatum.
If water accumulates at the bottom, Hypnum will gradually decline and be replaced by Plagiomnium, which tolerates wet conditions better.
And one last bonus tipfor people who live warm area:
If you grow small potted plants in unglazed clay pots on a north-facing balcony, you may eventually get a flowerpot completely covered in natural moss.
