Insect Terrarium idea: Moss and Fern Micro Landscape with Cave

This is a large vintage house shape insect terrarium. Its size 28.2cm x 18.3cm x 34cm / 11.1 inch x 7.2 inch x 13.4 inch. We made it for some buyers want large terrariums.

I built this terrarium for 2 reasons: 1. show how large it is; 2. show how to use it.

It is super simple. Just with moss and fern. It is also an easy to build terrarium. The tutorial will be updated on my youtube channel later.

Now share those beautiful photos.

To be updated.

this year, I updated this terrarium.

I made it two part, the house shape cover still with a front door, and the base.

now, you can plant really freely, no restrict. and it can contain water. do need to sphagnum layer and spray to keep it no leaking.

here is a bonsai style project I built with this updated design.

Plants: Serissa japonica

Stone: Lava rock

Moss: Bryum moss

Bryum is a very common moss that can be found in both cities and countryside areas around the world. Don’t worry too much about the exact moss name—any local moss you can find nearby will usually work. Check damp wall corners after rain or shaded areas in the garden.

Care

The Serissa japonica is planted in a drilled lava rock, so this part needs more frequent watering.

You can also replace it with other small plants you like, such as ferns or begonias. You can even plant them directly into the container without using the drilled lava rock.

Watering

Simply use a long-spout watering can and water directly.

The top dressing is also made of small lava rock. After some time, you’ll see the moss gradually spreading over the surface.
