The most I am using to make moss ball / kokedama is: Hypnum plumaeforme Wils. Moss.
This is a moss ball bonsai I made. This is how it looks when just finished.
This is the video how it is made.
This is a pure moss ball, made in the same way, same time but in smaller size (I forget to take photos of it). This is how it looks like after 2 months (hang in the shade of my plants).
Or you can buy a dry moss ball directly made of Hypnum plumaeforme Wils. Moss. It is available on NCYPgarden websitte, both in ball shape and a sheet. In most cases, the kind of green moss for topping orchid on the market is  Hypnum plumaeforme Wils. Moss too.
The following photos are a freshly made moss ball. It still looks greenish. If sinking in water for minutes, it becomes totally green. It will gradually become yellower and new green moss will grow out from it (when changed to a new environment, moss need time to adapt it). The more time it is stored, the more yellow it becomes. But that does not matter. Driness can not kill moss.
This is how it happens when I put it in the shade of tropical plants and water it daily, out door.
