Racomitrium japonicum Moss Terrarium Projects: Rock and Wood Landscape Ideas

This is artificially cultivated Racomitrium japonicum.


Cultivated Racomitrium japonicum is much larger than the wild form. When it dries out, it looks almost like thin little threads. After watering, it opens up again.

First, let’s introduce Racomitrium japonicum.


In appearance, it usually grows upright in small clumps. Its color can range from fresh green and yellow-green to grayish green. When dry, it becomes pale, grayish, and shrunken. After being misted with water, it opens up again and turns green.

Its biggest feature is drought tolerance.


However, being drought-tolerant does not mean it likes to stay dry all the time. A more accurate way to understand its care is this: it can dry out, but it should not stay in a stuffy, wet environment for too long. It needs periodic rehydration, but it should not sit in constantly wet soil.


Online information usually says Racomitrium japonicum is suitable for:


Open terrariums, semi-open terrariums, well-ventilated glass containers, rock surfaces, lava rock or sandy stone surfaces, bonsai top dressing, and the drier areas of insect enclosures.

It is often said that it is not suitable for sealed, high-humidity terrariums.

That makes sense. If it is drought-tolerant, then of course it cannot be too wet.


This is also what I found online:

It is not very suitable for fully closed terrariums with long-term high humidity, poor air circulation, and standing water at the bottom. When Racomitrium japonicum is kept too stuffy, too wet, and without a dry-wet cycle, the bottom can easily turn black, grow mold, or slowly rot.


Then there is the recommended substrate:

It is better suited to attaching thinly to mineral-based substrates, rather than being planted in thick, nutrient-rich soil. You can use lava rock, akadama, pumice, coarse sand, gravel, a thin layer of peat mixed with sand, or a thin layer of soil on a rock surface.


Recommended watering method:

Mist it with water → let it fully turn green and open up → keep it moist for a while → then allow the surface to slowly dry again.

Do not mist it every day until it stays wet all the time. In an open environment with good ventilation and strong light, it can handle a very clear wet-dry cycle. When it becomes pale and curls up after drying, that does not necessarily mean it is dead. The fact that it can recover after rehydration is one of the important features of this type of moss.


Light requirements:

It can tolerate brighter conditions better than many forest mosses. It is suitable for bright indoor light and a well-ventilated environment. If you are using grow lights indoors, medium to strong light is better than placing it in a dim corner. If the light is too weak, it may become leggy, darker in color, and loose in form.


The information above is a general introduction to Racomitrium japonicum.


I have used this moss in several terrarium projects, and so far they are all growing well. I have used it in both open containers and sealed containers.

After working with it, my summary is this: it tolerates drying, it cannot sit in water, and indoors it needs bright light.


Let’s not talk about lighting first, because lighting is easy to solve. Let’s talk about its drought tolerance.


It still needs moisture in the air. Without humidity, it cannot survive. No matter how drought-tolerant it is, it still cannot be compared with regular plants. All container recommendations are based on this point.


It sounds troublesome, right? It almost sounds like trying to find bones inside a stone, doesn’t it?


But actually, it is not that difficult. In my view, what it needs is simple: moisture without standing water.


And that is easy to solve. Put it directly on a vertical surface. Then the problem is gone.

Also, as you can see from the pictures, this moss grows in little clumps. Because of this structure, it is not going to spread like sheet moss. So when using it in a terrarium layout, you need to fill all the areas where you want the moss to appear.

Based on these two points, I created the following moss terrarium projects.


Project 1:

I used two pieces of shrimp wood, along with a few smaller pieces, and glued them together. Make sure to leave gaps between them.

At the bottom, I used small lava rock particles to help hold the shrimp wood in place. The whole glued wood structure is basically inserted into the lava rock.

In the larger gaps between the pieces of wood, I tucked in some sphagnum moss. At the very top, I wrapped the roots of a maidenhair fern with sphagnum moss and placed the fern between the two pieces of shrimp wood.

Then I used tweezers to fill the gaps with Racomitrium japonicum.

This moss is very light. You only need to place it where you want it to be.

And that is it.

As long as the moss has not curled up into tiny little threads, there is no need to mist it. Grown this way, it is both dry and moist at the same time, with no standing water at all.

Project 2

For this one, I glued three pieces of dragon stone together. At the bottom, I used small lava rock particles to help hold the stones in place.

Then I placed a little sphagnum moss into the larger gaps between the dragon stones.

Finally, I filled the gaps between the stones with Racomitrium japonicum.

And that is it.

As long as the moss has not curled up into tiny little threads, there is no need to mist it. Grown this way, it is both dry and moist at the same time, with no standing water at all.
