how to design a moss terrarium, or in other word, micro landscaping?
For me, the answer to this question is to imitate beautiful natural landscapes. Now there's a special word called micro landscape, which means the same thing.
If you see a beautiful landscape photo online, and want to make a mini landscape based on this photo in a terrarium. It's a very difficult thing, and you probably don't know where to start. But fortunately, we can refer to what people used to do.
Imitating natural landscapes is not a new thing. In ancient China, there were many people who liked traveling. They were keen to visit scenic places. And when they got home, they had the idea of bringing the beautiful landscape home. This is the birth of the Chinese garden, originated in the south, where the climate is warm and moist. They brought stones, dug pools, planted various plants, and imitated natural mountains and lakes.
However, these gardens were expensive after all. As the population increased, there was no extra land in the city. Some people wanted to (or had to) appreciate the beauty of nature indoors.
Therefor bonsai( bonsai is the Japanese word, and Penjing is Chinese) was born. It is the product of a much smaller imitation of natural scenery.
Bonsai is small. it is suitable for being placed indoor. It is perfectly suitable to be contained in a terrarium.
Mosses are widely used in bonsai. Various stones for bonsai can also be found in aquarium landscaping.
I will introduce some basic bonsai design Knowledge, which is about how to make a beautiful mountain shape out of small stones, and where to place the small plants to create a beautiful micro landscape.
Traditional bonsai uses small trees, Shaping a tree is a long term task, requires skill and are usually expensive. Herbaceous plant becomes a popular alternative.
