Cave-style Waterpond Moss Terrarium

Build Tutorial

I made a small “cave-style” setup.Water is stored at the bottom, and cushion moss (Leucobryum) is planted on top.

This kind of small container is ideal for growing cushion moss:it maintains humidity without waterlogging, and can go a long time without watering.

Materials & Process

At the bottom, I used heavy aquarium clay pebbles. You can also use small lava rock.

Then I placed a 3D-printed structure inside. The space between the structure and the glass wall is filled with clay pebbles. (I am not going to sell this 3D printed structure because it can be improved.)

On top of the structure, I brushed on a thin layer of red clay. This step is optional, but it helps the moss attach better and stay in place.

Finally, add water to the bottom.

How It Works

Once you see the structure, you’ll recognize it’s similar to my previous setups:

  • Plants and substrate stay above the water level

  • The water below stays clean

  • Moisture evaporates and circulates, keeping the whole container humid

(I wiped the glass before taking photos—otherwise the condensation would block the view.)

Maintenance

This setup requires very little watering.

Because the container is small (this one is about 17 cm long),the water at the bottom naturally creates humidity and light mist inside.

By the time I’m sharing this, it has already been growing for a while—and everything is doing very well.
