The moss I am using: Racomitrium moss.
For this project, I lifted the moss away from the bottom of the container and kept it away from standing water ( it is still in moist air). This makes daily maintenance much easier.
For this small piece of wood, I used foam to fix it in place. Foam is very useful for this kind of layout, especially when the design does not require very accurate gluing. It saves a lot of time.
Here, the small piece of driftwood and the glass wall behind it form a little triangular space. Inside this space, I placed some cut pieces of foam at the bottom as filling. Then, on the upper part above the wood, I added a thin layer of sphagnum moss and pressed it down firmly.
After that, I placed the Racomitrium japonicum on top.
I will post the making video later.
At the bottom, I added black lava rock.
How do I maintain it?
Just mist it with water.
One misting can usually last about a week.
You can wait until the moss looks clearly dry and slightly wilted before misting it again.
For beginners, I always recommend starting with just one type of moss. A single-moss layout can be very beautiful and clean. It is also much easier and more convenient to care for.
I do not really like terrarium layouts that are too full and crowded with plants. I prefer a more Eastern-inspired style, with some empty space left in the design.
The way I imagine using a small terrarium like this is very simple: place it on a desk, a shelf, or in a small corner of the living room, with a beautiful little light beside it.
When you are working on the computer, you can look up and see this small green landscape.
Or at night, when you walk through the living room, you can see this beautiful touch of green sitting quietly in the corner.
Also, have you noticed the tools I use?
Many of them are just simple everyday items: a spoon from the kitchen, tweezers or clips from a dressing table, or empty small bottles.
You do not always need professional tools to make a moss terrarium. Sometimes, the things around you are already enough.
