Grow moss on a lava rock

Updated: Sep 6, 2023

This is a bonsai style planting idea.

The plants: Araucaria heterophylla, Hypnum cupressiforme L. ex Hedw. moss

The material: sphagna, red clay soil, lava rock with drilled hole

This is an easy project, steps:

1. put sphagna in the hole.+

2. wrap the baby Araucaria heterophylla root to plant it in the hole (or you can choose soil.

3. mix the ed clay with soil to mud > brush the mud to the back of the moss.

4. paste the moss on the lava rock.

5. put the finished item in a deep plate, or bowl, or a container like mine. Please make sure the bottom part of the rock planter is in the water and the moss above water. The water will keeps clean and you will do not need a filer system.

how to maintenence: keep the lava rock planter bottom part in the water and the moss above water. Thus you need to put the whole piece in a deep plate, or bowl or an fish tank.

why I do this:

Lava rock is porous rock and water can go thru it. Sphagna has a strong ability to absorb water and keep them. By this way, the lava functions both as a planter and a filter. Water go thru it to the Sphagna which will transport water uoward to the roots. The lava rock surface is always wet which suitable for moss living.

The purpose of the red clay mud is to stick the moss on the lava. It helps the moss grow well. In 1-2 weeks the moss will grab the rock firmly. You can choose other mud too.
