Small-leaf Rhododendron, Miniature Orchid, Driftwood, and Moss Terrarium

Plants: Small-leaf Rhododendron and miniature orchid

Moss: A small variety of sheet moss (Hypnum moss). Other short-growing mosses are also fine, as long as they grow in flat mats.

Wood: Driftwood

Tools and materials: Fishing line and sphagnum moss

Stone: Small lava rock granules

How I Made It

First, I filled the grooves in the driftwood with some sphagnum moss.

Then I placed a thin layer of small sheet moss over the sphagnum moss and secured everything with fishing line.

After that, I took the miniature orchid and carefully tucked it under the fishing line so that it sat closely against the moss.

Next, I placed the driftwood on the base and filled the surrounding area with small lava rock granules.

Then I added a layer of sphagnum moss.

I planted the Small-leaf Rhododendron beside the driftwood, keeping the original soil around its roots, and pressed the soil firmly into place.

Finally, I added another layer of small lava rock granules as decoration.

The soil around the Small-leaf Rhododendron sits slightly higher than the surrounding surface, so there is no need to cover it with lava rock. I simply placed two pieces of moss over the exposed soil.

Finally, I placed the glass cover on top.

Care

Keep the terrarium away from strong direct sunlight, as it can burn the moss.

If you live at a higher latitude, gentle morning or evening sunlight is usually fine. However, strong direct sunlight around midday should always be avoided.
